Periods of vision examinations of children

Qualifying pediatric ophthalmologists and modern diagnostic equipment allow to conduct a full eye examination in children of different ages

Pediatric eye specialists of the clinic SVIT ZORU recommend to test eyesight of children as early as possible.

Checkups are carried out in compliance with the periods of development of the vision system of a child:

From the birth to 3 months of age a pediatric ophthalmologist conducts primary inspection of infants in order to exclude congenital anomaly of visual analyzer. Direct and consensual papillary reaction to the light is checked. From the first month a pediatric ophthalmologist checks tracking the objects, ocular motility, condition of anterior eye segment (eyelids, conjunctiva, cornea, iris and lens) and posterior eye segment (discs, optic nerves, vessels, central fovea of retina (macula) and peripheral retina).

From 6 months to one year of age.

In this period of child's life it is possible to determine ocular refraction, in other words parents should know how their child see and whether he/she has any congenital refractive error (shortsightedness, high degree of farsightedness, astigmatism, anisometropia). Based on the outcome of this examination the pediatric eye specialist determines the further tactics of management of such patients. If age-dependent indices of refraction and fundus of the eye are normal, the child is under care of an ophthalmologist at intervals of one year. If refractive error, problems of oculomotor system (strabismus), congenital abnormalities of crystalline lens (cataract), fundus of the eye (atrophy of the optic nerve disc, maculopathy, retinopathy) are diagnosed in a child – pediatric eye specialist chooses for your child individual checkup schedule and therapeutic approach.

Delicate adjustments of the vision system continue to the age 3-5. At this age the vision system is affected by harmful factors, as a result of which different pathologies may develop. Therefore the clinic SVIT ZORU recommends that even in the absence of complaints a pediatric ophthalmologist should examine a child at least once a year.

The next mandatory checkup of the visual organ is before school starts. This is precisely why children at six are recommended to have a comprehensive vision test. Turn attention to the importance of the checkup by a pediatric eye specialist of the fundus of the eye with a dilated pupil.

During school period annual examinations of children's eyes are recommended in order not to miss early changes.

Dear parents, always remember that childhood is just the period when the majority of vision system disorders can be treated without surgical intervention. For this purpose early diagnostics and adequate treatment started in due time are required. Often too much depends on when the disease is detected. Pediatric ophthalmology has no minor items!
